Black Leggings and Pearls

As mountain winter approaches
and the days grow shorter,
I dress for the evening
in leggings and pearls.

I putter about in socks,
hair piled high
and off my shoulders,
slouchy old sweaters…
Beat-Generation black---
the older the better.

Boho refined with a touch of old jewelry.

I remember a New York actor friend,
who dyed his balding head red
and taught me that the secret of eternal youth
lies in the soft lustrous glow of
pink light bulbs,
and of lamps draped
in rich luxurious fabrics---
I remember him saying
“They’ll never get women
out of leggings….”
And saying it
somewhat mournfully.

But I love finding myself
on these cold winter nights
feeling elegant, comfy
Boho and Beat.

Eternally young.

Warm in the glow
of soft pink light bulbs,
black leggings
and pearls.

Cold River:  A Self-Portrait

Even the river’s cold this morning.
Her smoky breath rides her waves
the way my own cloud puffs
number my breaths as I round
the curves up the mountain.

It’s a perfect winter day
and everywhere I turn
The river sings to me---
she roars, she lullabys,
she sings with deep knowledge
of earth’s sorrows and sins and promises.
She sings with all the hope
of a quickening woman’s heart.

She is my companion, this river woman---
She understands this crazy old heart of mine.

Her diamond sprays are a million eyes
embracing me, studying me,
hailing me towards what she knows
I don’t yet know---but wants me to learn.

She shapes my progress
up the mountain.
Well she knows my raging heart---
how alight it is with stars---
knows, too, that I’m part the moon’s child
as well as hers.

As freely as her own waters cascade
off the crest of this granite mountain,
my own spirit glides and soars the high blue ridge.
The beat of my heart echoes the roar of falls,
keeps time with the river’s lucent songs.

She’s teaching me to fly again, my river is----
to sing again…to love
and be loved…
at last …again.
